At this institution, standardized patients (SPs) are required to provide feedback for teaching and assessment cases, and the more useful it is, the better for student learning. We thought using game playing might improve the quality of the feedback given. Adults learn through self-directed learning, motivation, and life experiences. One motivator for learning may be game playing.
Description of Innovation/Discussion Topic
In this session, we will discuss how our SPs participate in a didactic session covering objectives for delivering feedback followed by a session of game playing. Additionally, we plan to discuss our findings from evaluations and pre/post testing after six months of employing this strategy.
Through this process, preliminary feedback indicates SPs enjoyed the game and felt it was a good way to learn the fundamentals of giving feedback.
We plan to continue the use of game playing in our training of SP's feedback skills and hope to expand it to other areas of their training.
